Autumn leaf color begins mid-fall and lasts 14 days or more, gradually turning from red to brilliant red-purple. 'Brandywine' is a male selection so it does not produce seedlings. It is well adapted to the south with good heat tolerance and significant resistance to leafhopper, one of the major pests of landscape red maples. 

Introduced by the US National Arboretum in 1994, it is a cross between Autumn Flame and October Glory, both are red maples. According to Dirr, it is similar in growth habit to October Glory.

Red maples provide nectar early in the season for bees and other pollinators.

Red maples provide cover for wildlife, nesting sites for birds, and are a good source of early-season nectar.

Faster growing than sugar maples, but not as fast as silver maples, this is an excellent choice for lawn, street, highway or park plantings, and as a shade tree for residential sites.
