Rhus aromatica Grow Low

Grow Low Fragrant Sumac

Excellent glossy foliage on low-growing, spreading plants. The foliage has a lemony scent when crushed. In the early spring, small yellow flowers appear at the twig tips before the foliage emerges. Hairy red fruits form in late summer. The fall foliage color is a good orange-red.

The flower nectar attracts butterflies and Luna moths. Turkey, ruffed grouse, robins, and flickers, as well as small mammals like raccoons, possums, and chipmunks feed on the berries. This shrub provides cover for small mammals and birds.

This fast-growing plant is good as a dense ground cover. In the early spring, small yellow flowers appear at the twig tips before the foliage appears. The stems root easily when they come in contact with the soil so it's especially good for holding banks. Excellent for roadside plantings.
