Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red'

Winterberry

Winter Red is a female winterberry holly that produces profuse red berries that retain their color. Considered by many to be the best winterberry. Berries brighten the winter landscape and provide food for overwintering birds. The inconspicuous flowers attract pollinators and require a male pollinator that blooms at the same time such as Southern Gentleman.

This is a large rounded clone of the southern form that is excellent in masses, shrub borders, for erosion control, and in moist areas. This deciduous holly also tolerates urban pollution and road salt.

  • Fast, upright growth habit
  • Native, deciduous holly
  • Bright red berries in winter prized by songbirds
