Pinus taeda

Loblolly Pine

Needles are in bundles of three growing 6-10" long. The habit is loosely pyramidal in youth, becoming more oval to rounded as trees age and lose the lower branches. Pine cones are 3-6" long in groups of three to five. As the tree ages, the bark thickens forming irregular, flaky plates that reveal a dark chocolate color when removed.

It provides wildlife habitat and winter cover. Squirrels and birds eat the seeds. Loblolly pine is also one of the leading commercial timber species in the southeast due to its large trunk size and fast growth.

Frequently planted to provide a fast-growing screen or buffer zone. Can be used in a meadow, woodland, or other naturalized area. Its characteristics also make it appropriate in a native, rain, or winter garden.
